Harold Newton was a founder member of the African American Group of Artists in Florida – the Highwaymen and heralded as the most famous.
Working in the Deep South, where the civil rights movement was only just beginning – they sold their works exclusively to white people. These
artists were forbidden to exhibit their work in any galleries for many decades – so they went door to door across Florida selling their paintings out of the
back of their cars; and accepting commissions on the spot. This is one such example. Our picture comes from a private sale and has never been to the market before.
